HOW DO DOGS GET HEARTWORM?
Mosquitoes transmit heartworm to your dog by depositing heartworm larvae into their skin.
The larvae migrate through the dog’s body and make their way to the heart where they develop into adult worms
Adult heartworms live in the heart and interfere with heart functioning and essentially cause heart failure.
SIGNS OF HEARTWORM
Exercise intolerance
Loss of appetite
Coughing
Fainting
Lethargy
Enlarged abdomen
HOW TO CHECK FOR HEARTWORM INFECTION
Speak to your veterinarian if your dog shows any of the above signs.
Your vet can diagnose heartworm through a simple blood test
(FREE heartworm testing until 31/05/2018)*
Your dog must receive a heartworm injection on the day the free test is done.
TREATMENT
Treatment for heartworm is expensive and difficult as the procedure has many potential side-effects.
PREVENTION
Heartworm is easily prevented. Speak to your veterinarian about which heartworm preventative is best for your pet.

Dr Julian Jacobsen
Victoria Park & Lathlain Vet Clinics
Graduated from Murdoch University in 1992 and worked for two years in the UK before traveling through Europe with his wife Dr Nyaree Jacobsen who is also a vet. They returned to Perth and entered into partnership at Victoria Park and Lathlain Vet Clinics in December 1999 with Dr Rick Fenny.
Julian and Nyaree have three teenage children two dogs, Ethal and Bessie and a cat called Rupert.
Julian has a special interest in surgery, especially stifle surgery (knee surgery) with a particular focus on cruciate disease and the Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy.
Outside of work he enjoys numerous hobbies, including building stuff (boat building, steel frame bicycle building, pizza oven, wooden structures) and long course triathlon. He has competed in numerous half Ironman distance events as well as the Melbourne Ironman in 2013 and 2014 and the Busselton Ironman 2014 and 2016.
